So, 3 weeks is better than 3 years, right?

My topic of the day is Training.  Oddly, today is a nexus of thoughts on training.  It's got 2 vectors going at work (the life of a nerd manager is regularly full of training!), plus the Great Burlesque Expo (be there or wish you were!) where I'll be teaching and I'm asst. class coordinator, and the next 4 weekends will have some form of dance training in them for me:
  • Quintavian Halfa - assuming my current cold doesn't kill me, I'll be there. Go to www.eastkingdom.org to find the event listing.
  • Wings over Conneticut - may even still have signup slots available.  I'm way excited cause I've used Wings of Isis on stage and I don't think I do a half bad job, but this is a Master Teacher, and I expect to learn a great deal.
  • Dance Feast - Where I am representing my teacher's group and teaching/performing some Bharata Natyam, and looking forward to taking some of the other awesome classes.
  • GBE - 6th year!  An awesome class lineup as always, and I'm really psyched for getting more time to teach as well as take some classes.

So, needless to say - I LOVE education.  In fact, I'm a junkie.  I have a MS in Computer Science, and I've been poking at MIT Sloan about possible MBAs (not anytime soon, but preparing to think about it).  I hold 3 digital security certifications (CISSP, ISSEP, and CLSSP).  And I have silly number of internal training credits in my former company's system.  Not to mention the longetivity of my time learning Bharata Natyam, Carnatic Music, and Kalari Payattu.  And Belly Dance.  And the myriad little bits of other dance forms.  And Burlesque.  And crafty skills.  And management improvement audio books... And podcasts...

But, what has me going today is the effect of training on organizations. )

So, gentle readers, I have been a long time off this loop.  For those of you who friended me way back when, you may remember that I'm more active when:
  • I'm not working
  • My work isn't blocking my LJ access

This account started in response to everyone I know getting on LJ, and me wanting a place to annotate my SCA dance life.  Then it became part everyday me, and part SCA me... and the Burlesque me is really spawned over to another account here and a presence on Facebook.

In the meantime, my work locked up LJ, and then I became a manager.  As it turned out, the two together combined to make me remarkably LJ-numb, because the communicative part of my brain got entirely eaten by being a daytime manager who spent the majority of the day reading and writing emails.  Doing more with people on computers in the evening has always been TOO MUCH - at least until I went to India last year and found myself both offline for most of the day and disconnected from all that I knew in the US.

Hi gang,

FYI, there's a proposal going at the Stack Exchange that I rather like:

http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/24184/crafts-crafting-and-crafters

and figured others who read this might, too.

I happen to really like the Stack Exchange Q&A user interface and have really enjoyed a couple other forums of theirs.  I can definitely recommend it, and it would be neat to see a hobby thing like this get off the ground.

So.. I always mean to blog about Kalari massage and never do as much as I wish.

This is my third time scheduling a katcha thrimmu massage - which is the massage for "healthful people" - the fine print is that only healthful people can survive it, and they really mean healthful *crazy* people - because if you were sane, you wouldn't do it.  I figure it must work kind of like the part of the movie where the super hero transforms for the first time - usually the process is excrutiating and unnatural - which sums it up nicely.

At this point, though, the startup process is a known quantity:
- don't eat meat or alcohol, try to put as much healthful food in the body as possible - veggies, whole grains, good dairy - buttermilk is a particular win... prep for a week ahead of time
- drink some awful tasting tinctures - when you can get them.. the search process has become easier, but we were so short on advanced notice this time that I haven't gotten them.
- since I will be swapping massages with Barry - I got a callous removing pedicure - not so necessary when receiving massage, but Barry is a whiny baby about calluses. :P
- do a bit of other depilation - toes caught in pubic hair is not fun... just a little trim there.  Also, since I'll be showing my armpits, it would be nice if they were not growing a mustache.
- pack a towel, soap, shampoo, bathrobe and spare cotton for a loin cloth

This time, I'm trading off with Barry (the body mechanic), Rajeesh (my guru's asst teacher) and Anil (my guru).  That's in escalating expertise.  Barry's really a riot - he's absolutely amazing when fixing people with his hands, but the foot thing throws him for a loop.  Rajeesh has gotten substantially more confident in the year since last he worked on me.  Anil is a constant baseline of utter confidence.  It's not too hard to feel whose foot's doing what.

The massage?  It's a foot massage.  If you're really lucky, you bring your own oil and you promise me some good booze sometime, I just may offer to the "restful" version... I love doing them at Pennsic, it really gets me in the mood of Indian persona.

The whole thing is done lying on the floor, with the masseuse applying foot pressure with the help of a rope suspended between two walls.

This year - wow - intense!  It's my third year, I'm 30 lbs lighter, and I've been doing kalari pretty seriously.  Apparently this is all indications that they should hit every pressure area on my body.  Seriously.  Every pressure point that causes mind numbing agony is apparently fair game.  I didn't even know I could *be* hurt in so many places!  Other years, the first day has had me feeling like "yeah, I can handle this" and it isn't until day 3 that I think ??Is this really a good idea??  They pretty much had me at that point in about 30 minutes.  The basic stretchy poses hurt, and the stuff I usually find relaxing hurt.  Even my favorite part - the face & head massage - hurt.  I really thought they were turning my face inside out.

Weirdly, however, as soon as it stopped, so did my memory of the pain.  Im a little sore - like I've been working out really hard.  But not sore like someone beat me up...  as soon as it was over, I felt light and invigorated -- and STARVING!  The no meat diet seems to make me hungrier, and I had a dramatic weight loss last week.  I think my body is still fighting back, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised when after 3 hours I started thinking everyone looked like a tasy pork chop!

I'm kind of amazed at having done this 3 years - I've always seized the opportunity - there's not many folks that will do and teach this stuff, and Anil's won awards for his skill at kalari and as a teacher in India... but to have had the opportunity and availability to do it 3 years running is pretty wild.

Crossing fingers for tomorrow - I'll be doing this for 6 more days.

Yep, I'm an lousy blogger.  I actually blog a bit on the Weight Watchers site, as it has the advantage of not being blocked by work.

But here's a drive by:

1 - VOTE FOR US!!

The Dig This Awards are up - http://digboston.com/experience/2011/10/dig-this-awards/

And we're nominated.  We're pretty psyched and we'd really like to win.  Vote once, vote often - but VOTE BEFORE midnight TOMORROW!!

2 - Hire me!

My company has (once again) become an extraordinarily unpleasant place to work.  At least this time, the technical work is interesting.  But the company is really treating it's people pitifully and I'm pissed enough to look for better opportunities.

So - if you know of an opening, let me know.  These days I'm a security architect, a leader of a team of developers or a professional services type person - I'm not a run of the mill, hands on everyday developer - I just haven't done that work recently.  I actually know a lot about Java architecture, but developing in it all day everday isn't what I'm looking for.

I'm not at all tied to defense, although I'm most seductive as a defense contractor cause I have the background, big time.  But I would prefer to stay a little close to security.

I'm scared at this - I don't mind saying - the last time I interviewed it was abysmal finding a job, and not because of scarcity, but because I had stopped being an every day developer and I didn't know what to do with myself.  Now I know, but I'm still gearing myself up for this to take a while.

I know I'm a catch - I'm smart, I am beloved by all levels - my people like me, my management likes me, and customers like me, and I really, really know this security stuff.... but I HATE selling, and that includes me.

It really rocks.  I can't believe I'm getting to reprise two of my favorite numbers.  I also designed an all out lingerie set for a new number in the show and choreographed two group numbers that I'm REALLY proud of.  C'mon down!

Wow, two great things just happened:

First: - a book I have been looking for FOREVER just came my way at a time when I could manage to snag it:

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=5142481549&cm_ven=nl&cm_cat=trg&cm_pla=want&cm_ite=viewbook

I've seen these run up into multiple hundred of dollars - and while this wasn't cheap, it was doable.  It's a great collection of the textiles I've studied and tried to reproduce.  I feel a bit of guilty pleasure, since I'm not so active with fabric making these days, but I hope at some point I'll get back to it and this book could be tremendous.

Also - I was helping a young lady with a performance in Trimaran and she just wrote me to say she won!  The Trimaran Indians are really kicking ass this year.  Madhavi is sitting Vigil for her Laurel (Easterners - don't freak, Trimaran is a heads-up kingdom!  she knows!), Lalitha kicked ass at a Persona presentation in the fall, and now Aibhilin's won a major Trimaran award!  Go Trimaran Indians!

I'm quite excited - I'll be going to the Hafla this weekend!  I'm psyched to dance and get to see everyone!

Then off to celebrate a birthday in the evening!

ALSO!  Extremely cool, I'm now teaching 2 (count 'em!) classes on Sundays:
11:00 AM Dance Complex, Cambridge - Bollywood - I'm substitute teaching for one of my teachers while he goes to India to renew his Visa.  Limited time only - he's back mid April.

6:00 PM - my very own "Bump -n- Grind Your Butt Off" - http://www.bostonbabydolls.net/classes.cfm - A totally 100% "Betty" class.  Partially inspired by Evil Anne and her Death by Shimmies (there is a good solid 10 minutes of shimmying), partially inspired by being bored in just about every aerobics class I've ever taken, and mostly inspired by just having a really great set list of Babydolls-esque music that makes me want to dance.  It's a guided dance workout - not beating on technique, but enough complexity to keep you engaged, and if I see people getting the hang of something, I add to it or make it harder.

It's been really fun to teach this last one for the last month and a half and we're plowing into our third month in March.

Last but not least - another kickass show is coming up

March 11-12, Mr Cupid's House of Love
http://www.bostonbabydolls.net/calendar.cfm?calyear=2011&calmonth=3&caltype=full

8:00 at the Cambridge YMCA theater
(WHERE WE HAVE OUR NEW RESIDENCY!!! WOHOO!!!)

It's about 1/2 as crazy as the Wrathskellar - a little closer to our "normal" shows - Burlesquey with a certain mix of cute, funny, sensuous and technically cool.  But with a certain old timey New Orleans Storyville flavor and a wistful air for a more gracious time.

(but since it's really all about me....)

And a choreography that is definitely pushing me as a choreographer - Save My Soul (version 3.0 if you are a hardcore fan...).  This time with 5 people - 4 ladies plus Scratch.  With a certain modern musical styling of everyone moving, not necessarily in unison in ways that coordinate.  It's really keeping me on my toes - the writing goes in fits in spurts, unlike my normal almost industrial rate of 1 minute = 1 hour, I'm finding that 1 minute takes moments, while the next minute takes 3 hours! And it's also a challenge to the dancers - there's not much time or space to queue off anyone, cause once you get into the "groove" the groove changes.

This is definitely a good technical push for all of us and it's a good mental redux of some of the very non-intuitive choreography I've been enjoying my Indian classes.

After I don't know how long of muttering about doing dance class that is really MY style - I'm proud to present

Belly Dance With a Twist
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/115677

4 Thursdays -  June 17-July 8

At our BABE studio:

119 Braintree St.
Suite 208
Allston, MA 02134

I'm pretty psyched.  I chose not to call it "Lakshmification", because only a select handful of people (those reading this blog), would get it.

But my plan is just that - I want to give people the building blocks to blend Middle Eastern and Indian dance whether they're doing improv or planning a routine.  I'll end up gearing the class to the level of the students - so consider it "all levels".  Fortunately, I've learned through Indian dance how to keep the experts challenged while not killing the new people!

Agenda will include:
  • Some serious but kicking delivered with great joy - death by shimmy and the Indian version - tat'adavu - if you haven't tried it, you won't know how much you hate it.  But it's just want you want to make the Indian stuff look good, and to give you the best derriere that money can't buy.
  • Combinations that blend Indian and Middle Eastern.
  • Tricks for transitions between the two.
  • And the icing on the cake - the pretty little things that make for great dance, no matter what
My biggest focus is going to be improvisation this time.  I'm certainly happy to do a choreography focused class, if there's a demand (?) in the fall.  But for summer season, I think partying at fire circles takes precedence!

Whee!  I hope to see at least some of you there!

OK, *not* this Friday -- I have an engagement.

I also didn't see much interest - I know lioritgioret is interested, cause she's a giant fabric addict and also a dealer. :)

But if it's just her and I, we'll schedule offline and do something low key.

So... if you're interested in the fashion show - please post here, so I know who to include.  And let me know what free time looks like for you...
bethlakshmi: (Default)
Hi gang,

For those interested in seeing the Indian stuff... how does Friday night look?  If not Friday, what day in the next 2-3 weeks is good for you?  My schedule is pretty inconsistent right now - Sundays are out, and Thursdays (unless rehearsal changes...).  Otherwise it's all unpredictable.

So, let me know what days work - I'd like a consensus from anyone interested...

Whenever it is, it'll be at my place in Mattapan, I'll send directions when the time comes.

** Don't forget!  Vote for us in the Phoenix!!

I promised myself before I left that I wouldn't stop blogging as long as I had some memories worth writing about.  It'll be a fight for time - I'm always pressed for time in regular life.  But I don't want to let precious memories slip away...

But first - VOTE FOR US!  Every day!
And tell your friends.

We're successfully nominated as a Best in Boston group!
The category is "Best Dance Troupe, Sexy"

I'm home.  Safe and sound.  And even a little rested.

The plane journey was... a plane journey.  Saying goodbye was just as sad as I imagined, but returning home was just as good as I imagined.  I've seen new_man, had steak tips, mac n cheese, and salad (raw! yay!), and then had a long, seductive session with my memory foam mattress.

Now, unfortunately, it's 1:30AM and I'm awake.

I have a sore throat.  It's very mild, but I can't kick it, and I'm nervous, because Amma was sick and it started in her throat.

The Luftansa rules are hard to understand.  The website makes no sense, and isn't at all what the rules were checking in.  In the end, I made it through with no charges.  If I'd had a charge for overfull bags, it would have been $150 US, flat rate.  So I'm very glad I shipped stuff.  I was able to juggle my overweight stuff into my carry on, and then check one carry on at not additional charge.  As a far as I can tell, everything came through customs fine, although I haven't gone checking anything yet.

Home is good.  Already, the whole world just feels less intense and I already feel more capable in it.  Sadly, it makes India seem like a bit of a dream...

The last 3 hours are the hardest.  Being sad to leave outweighs being happy to get home.  Just had last Kannada lesson.  Read my way through my first "book".  It's an ABC book aimed at 6 year olds.  Happily, Arno and I are at about the same level, although I think my grammar may be better when I write.

Also, luggage still looks daunting.

In the effort to be cheery... here's a little thing I wrote a few days back when the power was out. for a few hours.

It's 3:00 here.  I start my journey at 11:00.  That's when I start to take an auto, to a bus, to the airport.

The package is mailed - it's got mostly workout clothes, and a few of my saris from the US.  My hoard is all in my suitcases (... my precious...).

The last of the shopping is DONE.  Shikakai powder (Meera brand) is in hand.  Also some other local simple stuff.

We have a plan for the airport.

The bags are fully packed to their upmost capacity.  I have a few concerns about weight and # of carryons, but it can all be worked out with the power of my credit cards.

I want the next 8 hours to pass as quickly as possible.  Read more... )

This is the end of my second to last day here.  It remains fun, but I'm still ready for home.

I keep preparing myself for a nice, quiet, stay at home, boring sort of day.  Never!

Amma was sick today, my bet is that it's a cold - tired, achy, runny nose, slight cough...  For her, the weather is very chilly.  I'm still failing to see why I want a wool wrap.  We look funny on the street at night.  She's in a sweater, a headscarf and a sari.  I'm in the lightest cotton imaginable.

But just when you think you're staying home... )

Woah.  That was the most powerful reality shaping magic I may ever have seen.

Yesterday, as you might have guessed from the sheer volume of posting I did, I was pretty homesick.  But the Top 10 list seems to have worked wonders.  I've always felt that if you focus on the positive, life is just better.  I also believe that what you say (or type... as the case may be) influences reality.  If not directly, in a butterfly flapping its wings sort of way - the good things you say will affect someone, who touches someone else, and so on, until more good stuff is in the universe.

But this is ridiculous.

Today I had a day of almost all Good Things. Mostly from the Top 10 List of India.

For those of you posting anonymously, this means what you post will appear right after you post it, instead of whenever I read it and publish it.
