OK, this has been cooking in the brain for a while, but I figure today is the right day for it...

These have been brewing for a while in the back of my brain, but now that it's the tail end of my trip, I think it's time to finish it.

I'd make an order if I could, but I don't think I can.   So these are in no particular order.

Hi gang,

I'm back on Base from Mysore Part II.

Truth is, I'm home sick.  Homesickness means nothing is as much fun as it might be, and I think Mysore Part II had more downs than ups.  That said, the wedding part was really fun, as was meeting Amma's best friend Reka.  Although we didn't talk a ton, I like her very much.  Her English is very good and the way she talks shows she is a kind, considerate, thoughful woman.  I can see why she's Amma's best friend.

I'm posting the rest of the dance set to Flickr right now.  I'm doing it as we prepare to leave, so the photos may not get all uploaded and they may not all get descriptions - but they are up on my Flickr stream.

The current has been choppy today.  It's been on about 50% of the time and there is no telling when it cuts out.  There is usually a 2 hour or so break in the current each day, but often I don't even notice - the house doesn't need that much power to run.  Today it's been awful - I wanted to post before leaving, and mail some email.  And I wanted to upload photos.  And take a hot bath (water heater is electric), and charge up some batteries for things and all sorts of stuff... GRR.

That is something I will not miss - Indians are pretty mellow about some shortages - cell phone gaps, current outages, really slow arrival of things you request.  They take it in stride and don't get very pissy about it.  Yet they can be very fussy about clothes, jewelry and other products.  I appreciate the mellow attitiude, but I think someone needs to get grumpy about massive utility outages.

I decided yesterday - "yes to Mysore".  Partly a plan in the hand was worth two in the bush.  Partly wedding + silk shopping is pretty alluring.  Partly to make the days go by fast - India is nice, but I'm looking forward to home too.

I'm still of two minds.  My friends were thinking of taking me out sight seeing and family visiting over the weekend, but they didn't tell me that - I figured they'd maybe only want to see me one night or two during my visit.  I'm a little sad, cause I like them a lot and would have seen more of them if I'd figured out the Indian thinking patterns right.  Ah well. Can't be psychic, and it's hard to communicate in a country where you only speak one of the major languages.

So... I'll be heading out in an hour or so, away all day Sunday, back Monday night (my time).

This is the new set my friends bought me.

So... in the summer of 2007, I think I posted about this great training session I went to - a 1 week management seminar from Smith College for women with engineering backgrounds who were going into management.  I loved it, and after a year and a half, I feel safe saying it was truly a life changing experience that I will always remember.   It definitely set me up to be a great manager - many of the things I learned there, or refined there, have made me a better leader - especially at work, but sometimes also in the Boston Babydolls.

Now I can truly say, it gave me friendships that have spanned years and continents.

Woah.  Yet again, after much frustration, everything falls into my lap unexpectedly.

Managed to successfully mail cloth covered package.  It was around $120 US.  OUCH.  That's pretty expensive, to me, for domestic shipping, but not necessarily for international, and it was pretty heavy.  The purpose of the mail was to mail heavy stuff home to avoid airline charges.  I'm uncertain what would be more expensive - the airline or this.  But if it's break even, at least it means less airport shlepping.  The cost was so close between "fast" and "not fast" (about $20), that I went with "fast", so the package may beat me home - 4-6 days.  I am doubtful.  I have never had anything arrive from India in 4-6 days.

But that's not the truimphant part.

This is... )

I should appreciate that I managed a set of errands with only one major snafu - the post office.  It turns out, you have to cloth wrap packages to mail international.  I can't really blame anyone for not telling me -- after all, how often do we mail international packages in the US?  But, it meant I shlepped my big box for the mail all the way there... then to a stationary that could do it, but was closed, and then back home.  Amma says I can do this myself, so we'll get cloth tonight and then take another crack at it tomorrow.

Now, it seems, I have a little time to breathe.

Just a little, though, there may be a wedding on the 30th-31st in Mysore that I might go to.  It's my choice - if I go to the wedding, we'll also see some museums we missed in Mysore, and maybe do some Mysore silk shopping.  If not, I stay in Bangalore, where I might have learned the territory enough to poke around on my own.  Aparna and Anil left for Germany on the 25th, so it's Amma, Preeti, Arnama and I until I leave for Boston.

After a whirlwind trip of Trivandrum, I'm off to Hampi.  So this, too, will not be a long post.  I just pullled all the photos of the last two trips from my camera, but don't have the time to get them on Flickr.  The turnaround from one trip to the next is literally 1.5 hours.

Indian travel and I are still coming to terms with one another.  I suffered from problems with heat in Trivandrum, but I'm much perkier now that I'm back in Bangalore.

In Trivandrum, I saw the southernmost tip of India - which I will find a name for soon.  I stayed in what I'm pretty sure is a 4 or 5 star hotel, got toilet paper (you have NO idea how exciting that is... bidet style is the defacto Indian toilet experience) and then visited Anil's home village for 1 day.  I was pretty limp by the end of all that - I don't get carsick, but the road to Anil's village made me car sick.

Now I'm back in Bangalore, and doing much better, but the Hampi trip has gone from 3 days to 5, with a return date of the 27th.  I'll be going by train at 8:30 PM.  I'm good with this.  Train is supposed to be a comfortable (and cheaper) experience, and we will sleep on the way and stay in a friend of Aparna's house.   I'll gladly take more time in Hampi - a slower trip is better, and Hampi (aka the fallen capital of Vijayanagara)  has been the focus of my Lakshmi research, so more time is good.

Even better - I have new clothes!  4 new sari sets (with blouse peices) and 1 new dress are ready for me.  So not only am I packed, but everything in my luggage *and* on my body is freshly clean.  After sweating my way through Kerala, this is a wonderful feeling.

Plus I have new clothes.  And fussy tailoring that I would not normally do myself.

I feel pretty.... oh so pretty....(insert West Side Story music here)

That's not to say I've gone totally native.  Dreams in Trivandrum were filled with thoughts of home.   My memory foam bed is a distant, fond memory.

This will be super brief.  I'm in from Mysore (got in at 10:30, now it's 12:30), repacked and I'm off again to Trivandrum.  The trek starts at 6:00 AM tomorrow.  This is the biggest outing yet, unsupervised.  I take an auto to the big bus depot, and then take the bus to the airport.  Airport to Trivandrum.  From there, I am once again in the hands of friends -- my Kalari teacher Anil or his friend will pick me up and get me to Anil's house just outside Trivandrum.

I have found that my cell phone works, and has great power, but I should be OK going to an airport on my own... I hope.

Mysore was good.  As with everything, the good vs. the bad is unpredictable and I have to learn to just take things in stride.  I saw many things I'd seen before 10 years ago, and it was interesting to see the differences between my memory of them and the current reality.  Sometimes things were much better, sometimes they were sadly worse.

It's been 2 non-stop days with Amma and Arno.  They are both great folks, but Arno is 6 years old, and full of twice the normal amount of energy that any 6 year old should have.  After two days solid of that energy, I'm glad for a bit of a break.  The quiet of the plane to Trivandrum will be good.  Not sure what I'm in for, though, Anil has a daughter who is somewhere around 3-5...   Crossing fingers that she's a quiet kid who likes to color pictures or something.

I'm a little homesick today.  The trip was really good - but I'm finding myself longing for a fast, easy Bostonian conversation, a hamburger, and the ability to drive myself in my own car to do whatever strikes my fancy.

I begin to understand why Indians have such a well developed astrology system.  It seems to me that life here is much more prone to the vagaries of fate than life in the US.  Sickness is abrupt and more intense.  Travel may either be very fast, or very slow.  Things can fall into place when they have no right to, and they can collapse into chaos at the slightest provocation.

Either I have gained great wisdom, or I don't know what the hell I'm talking about... I'm not at all sure which.

Today was my first day trying to do things on my own.  I said I felt comfortable trying, and so the baby bird was kicked, politely, out of the nest.  It has not yet gone so well... the good news is, I found my way back to the computer, and I'm not poorer, bruised, battered or otherwise harmed.  So... let's call it "adventure".  The only thing damaged is my ego - I'm used to being independent and to doing things on my own - even in foreign places.

We have a plan...

Not only has Amma taken over as Programme Planner to the Stars, but also Anil is much better.  His fever is down, and the doctor says it's just a fever, not any of the really awful varities.  Still, a fever will kick your butt, and it's good that I'm not there right now - he needs a few days of rest.

BUT!  We have a new plan.  The family travel agent and I are developing a deep relationship. :)

First, we're going, by car, to Mysore (as previously planned) Jan 17, returning Jan 18.

Then I'll be going, probably by plane, to Trivandrum Jan 19th in the morning.  When I return, and to what city is still a mystery.  I would like to be in Trivandrum for at least 2 full days, which means returning on Friday.  Then we have two things to consider - the vagaries of Indian transportation, and the needs of Preeti's family - we may go to Hampi the weekend of the 23rd-26th.  OR we may go the weekend after.  IF we go the weekend after, then I may go straight from Trivandrum to Chennai to hang out with Aparna.

At this point, I'm getting along well enough with Preeti, Amma and Arno that I don't mind if Chennai gets a bit delayed.  I'm worried about Anil and would like to see him and Trivandrum, and that's a go.  Then it's 6 of one...  if I return to Bangalore, I also get to pick up the saris and blouses.  If not, then I get to see Aparna sooner -- win/win.  I admit, I'm eager for the saris - my Western clothing is much too hot, and I packed 50/50, Western/Indian, so I'm getting a little tired of the same few cotton outfits that I have.

Wish me luck!

Decorated godsYesterday was Sankranti.  Sankranti is the festival of the start of the harvest, it is about good fortune, the good harvest and sharing it with others.  Pretty cool, huh?  Today (the 15th) is the day of a solar eclipse.  I'm a little unclear on whether Sankranti and the eclipse are related... I don't know enough about astrology.  Sankranti is clearly yearly, and the eclipse is, of course, planetarily related - so I'm not sure they are guaranteed to coincide.

Anyway - back to Sankranti...

By request - this is Amma... and the jewelery store guys at the first jewelry store we purchased from. She's a powerful negotiator - she was charming the pants of the jewelry store guys while still driving a good bargain. The guys to either side of her are the jewelry store guys.

For the record, Amma is actually named Dr. Srivalli. She's a published author, and I believe her doctorate is in Kannada literature. She's one smart lady!

Today has been the required lounging day.  I was tired, stressed, and freaked by all the changes in plans, so I appointed today a day of rest.  This worke well, since Amma took Aparna to the airport and then didn't get back until 1:30 - which gave me time for a quiet breakfast, lots of coffee (which I have learned to make on an Indian stove), practice, Kannada homework and general lounging.

By the time Amma got back, I was stir crazy and went for a walk.  Then I went to the salon.  I fell a bit victim to the classic upcharge - I went for a head massage, and let myself be talked into a "hair spa" which included shampoo, head massage, conditioner, steaming my head, blow drying me and braiding my hair.  It was all very nice, but the price went from 180 rupees to 728!  That was rather obnoxious, and I wish they'd said clearly that the fee was over 3 times higher.  That said - 728 rupees is still under $20, and for a wash, massage, and blowdry, more than fair in US dollars -- but not really a steal.  I'm slightly concerned that the salon now sees me as rich, and therefore willing to spend alot of money.  Probably won't go back for a while.

It was nice, though, and the head massage was pretty fantastic.

Anyway, I digress.

Amma to the rescue

I'm not sure if she sensed that the chaos was wearing on me, or that Aparna has such a history of not sticking to a plan, that she's used to balancing out the erratic nature of her daughter's schedule.  Anyway, Amma has stepped in as "Programme Planner".  And she has said both that Aparna has always had an erratic schedule and set of commitments, and that it's not quite so normal - even for India.  She said, flat out, that although things have been changing, plans made with her *will* happen.

So.. now we have some plans.
- 17th-19th we are going to Mysore to see the sights, do some shopping, stay in Amma's house there, and come back by way of Sri Ranganatha temple - my favorite temple from my last trip to India.
- 29th-31st (maybe 1st) - we are going to Hampi.  I decided not to partake of a 5 day tour extravaganza.  Oddly, going privately with the family will be more expensive, but I think easier all around.  I don't really want to see short spans of everything in the region - I want to delve into Hampi, and maybe one other thing.  So we are going ourselves.  Amma knows a lot of the history and has seen Hampi before, so she can give me lots of details about the place.  We will be going during a festival there, which may be very crowded, which is unfortunate... it'd be nicer to avoid the hoards.  We will stay at the home of a friend in a nearby town.

We're calling tomorrow to cancel the plane tickets to Trivandrum for the 15th to the 18th.  Anil is better - his fever has gone down, but he has some very serious joint aches from the fever, and he's staying in the hospital to recover.  I have no idea what that means -- these days in the US, staying days in the hospital is a major, big, on-death's-doorstep sort of affair.  Not the sort of thing I'd associate with joint aches, however bad they may be.  But perhaps the Indian rules for what needs hospitalization are different.

The doctors will say more about Anil tonight, when the bloodwork is done.

At any rate, no matter how good the results, it's not at all reasonable to believe he's going to be perky and up for adventure by Friday. It is definitely beyond being a 24 hour = all better sort of thing.

It's possible that I will be able to go to Trivandrum from the 18th to the 21st or so, and then Chennai from the 21st to the 27th.  Amma and I have worked out that I *must* be in Bangalore by the 27th (or anytime after the 25th) to try on the dance costumes, and deal with any re-fittings.  Ideally, I would also like to have some time to run through after the 21st and get the cholis and saris.  I'm getting a bit tired of the light weight Indian clothes I have with me - the Western clothing is much too hot to be enjoyable most of the time.

If not that, then I may stick around, pick up the saris/cholis, and go to Chennai on the 22nd to the 27th... it depends greatly on Aparna's schedule.  There's no reason to go to Chennai if she's not there.

In the meantime, Kannada classes are going well, and Amma has some thoughts for pointing me in the direction of local palaces and museums.  Sometimes the two are one and the same.  I could also handle some book store shopping locally.

I've had a wierd up and down day.

This is frequently true - but more so today. The way plans seem to work here is generally rather fluid with a lot of ups, downs, and other surprises. But today, even more so.

OK, so I've been trying to figure this out for days...

Is a halfway decent approximation of where I am sitting right now. Actually, I'm across the street from the "A" blob - the easiest way to get directions seems to be by googling on the salon I went to yesterday, and using their business address. Since I know that Madhura Estates (our apt. complex) is exactly across the street, this is a pretty good map.

Just when I want to post, the power is out.  This is a no-big-deal occurrence here – 10 years ago, it happened once a day.  Now, I’m not sure it’s so frequent, but it’s happened twice since I’ve been here and nobody is stressed.  It hasn't happened at night at all.  I’m starting offline and will post when I can.

Chennai was a whirlwind of greatness.  We took a private car from Bangalore.  The car arrived quarter to 8:00, but we didn’t leave until 9:30.  This is apparently no big deal – no one seemed stressed.
