Madame Burlesque
Cambridge YMCA Theater
Central Square, on Mass Ave.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday - doors at 7:30, show at 8:00
It really rocks. I can't believe I'm getting to reprise two of my favorite numbers. I also designed an all out lingerie set for a new number in the show and choreographed two group numbers that I'm REALLY proud of. C'mon down!
On other news - I am happily perusing a new book on the Vishnu Puranas that I bought c. 600 AD translation that includes some wonderful dance excerpts - will post an all out review later.
Classes are going well - I have an Indian recital August 28th - let me know if you're interested and I'll follow up a friends locked post with details. I should be doing a older dance that I've never gotten to perform before (too long, no good recording) - called a varnam and a Bollywood number. What all else, I don't know - these days the students are doing really well, so I don't have to be a show filler. It's nice how cool everyone in classes is. We're quite a snazzy little school these days.
I've been learning Bollywood this year, and it's absolutely a blast. It really is the synthesis of me-ness, even if it it ridiculously OOP. It combines so many of my favorite dance things - Indian moves, belly dance, and pure cheesecake. Having the Big Dumb American grin and more than my fair share of T&A is totally an asset in this form and I'm loving it. It's also giving me some good inspiration for new Babydoll moves which is good for getting me out of my choreography rut.
I'm moving on in Kalari to weapons - which is super exciting. I read the Armored Rose last year and it blew my mind, it was so dead on. This year doesn't seem to be so much of head trip, perhaps because I have a better instruction manual for my brain. I'm not at all good yet, but that's OK, it's good to have something to practice.
Bharata Natyam is focusing on a song in tribute to a statue in a Hoysala temple I really love. I'd bet money the song is OOP, but the poses are not since they mimic poses from statues of the temple. It's all about a woman who is carried away by the joy of dancing and playing her drum - that's my kind of dance!!
So... Burlesque hasn't taken ALL my time, although no Pennsic for me this year... Madame Burlesque will go on tour! I had hardly wait - it's daunting and exciting and exhausting all at once.
