I don't blog much about work these days, partly cause I can't blog from work (so I don't blog much at all), and my mind isn't on the work topic when I do blog. But also I don't like discussing company stuff publicly.

But this is not company-related, and it's too good to not pass along:

Ironic no? - "god bless scratch" - for you American lit geeks. :)

This is just a little rant to reaffirm that free gigs are rarely worth it, and that I dearly appreciate the frustration and leg work that Scratch, the Boston Baby Dolls owner/manager/producer goes through on our behalf. I don't say thank you to Scratch often enough, and my positive take away from tonight is a big huge THANK YOU is owed to him for enduring unending stupidity so that I can participate in cool dance things.

I'm free tonight. Not booked or overbooked, not desperately needing to sleep, or catch up on something, not on the road... just a little tired and not overly eloquent after a hectic week and a late night at work. I'll be putting in time over the weekend... but I'm just toasty enough that being here tonight would not be good.

Any ideas for a good place to blow off steam? A dance club appealed but I'm not sure where folks go these days. Or a dinner with a friend if anyone's up for it...

Last night's classes were awesome. We're learning our first Mohini Attam choreography, and I'm finally caught up after slacking during BBE. For the first time in a while, I was not surprised by stuff I should have known.

Even better - Kalari class moved on to stick fighting. Up to now it's been crazy high energy exercises. But our teacher decided we're good enough to start hitting with sticks. I've been dubious about this part - but am eager to have a break from killer exercises. I liked it way more than expected. The focus is precision and speed, not force. We started with foam tubes that are the right length and thickness but the wrong weight. It may be we want rattan that is either SCA thickness or a little thinner.

I thought this might mess with me - I'm not an instinctive fighter, my flight impulse is very strong. But I had a GREAT time hitting people with...er... foam. Very cathartic.

Today is becoming a very frustrating day at work. I wish hitting people with sticks was part of my job.

As you might notice, I'm posting during the weekday. I got a swanky new toy - a MOTO Q9C, that can get to LJ. Chances are I still won't post or read daily - my work is too busy these days to allow much time. But if anyone out there uses a mobile phone and has suugestions on how to use LJ painlessly. I'd welcome thoughts.

So... here's another funny thing - after all the photo shoots lately, I find myself trying to get a professional photo submitted for a leadership conference at Smith. I have a ton of fab pictures from the last few BBD years, but they are all Glamour Girl shots. Not one is serious & intelligent. While my inner new age feminist grumbles about the ongoing divisions between smart and pretty, the practical professional looks for suggestions on getting a fast and free (or cheap) businessy photo. The best one I have is an ID pass to a fort!! And it isn't good enough res to survive scanning and sending!

This one has been stewing for a while, and I thought would indulge myself with a little holiday blathering. I'm sure lots of very smart and experienced people have already written this stuff down, but since this is my blog, maybe I get to say it all over again.

The topic of the day is auditions. In the last year or so, I've had the opportunity to be the interviewer for both engineering interviews and auditions. I've also been the interviewee more times than I care to think about, and have participated in a few dance and theater auditions here and there. Lately, I've been struck by the significant differences in corporate engineering interviews versus small troupe auditions.

blathering cut for your protection )

I made my first ever hiring decision today. I have now got a team that has a majority of members who are more experienced that me. Including a former boss - karmic return at its best. :)

On other things:
- If you've ever ridden the London Underground - here's a kick:

http://www.emmaclarke.com/fun/mind-the-gap/spoof-london-underground-announcements

- There is, for the record, NO SMILING DURING THE ICY GLARE OF DEATH

- Watching the West Wing Season 2 is making me cry. I can't tell whether it's the fact that our President isn't nearly so awesome, or the fact that I wish I was so good at being a leader as these people. If I could inspire my people the way these characters inspire me... we'd have a damn good team.

- It's just a little scary when IT seems to recognize you when you call. I've tormented many a sub-contractor or support line in my day, but never the internal IT organization. I did, however, get them to promise to sing me a little song when they deliver my wireless card. Which song has not yet been defined, but I'm hoping for something to the tune of "today is your birthday... it's my birthday too, yeah!".

So, I've been performing my head off with the Babydolls. My house looks like a Burlesque dancer has totally lost her mind. I have pasties on the coffee table, glitter in the hallway, and costumes in all phases of construction draped here, there and everywhere. :)

Meantime, work has been very fun. They denied my Agile attempts - mostly because "we've never done THAT before" but also because when the customer signed the contract, we implied a non-Agile process. And it's a radical enough change to be something the customer should get to choose. I'm still pondering ways to insert some Agile techniques into our world - like test driven development. But mostly I'm hanging on for the ride. There is so much to do and never enough time to do it. I have my feet in both worlds - management and technical. But I rather like that.

But... that's not what I wanted to tell you about. I wanted to let you know that all our energy for our longer runs of Out for Blood are now focused into one killer night of Halloween Spirit!

There is an e-Postcard for the show at http://www.bostonbabydolls.net/images/oct07-forweb.jpg

So - first for the non-geeks that read this, I'll start with the general life stuff you don't have to read any further. If you don't read past the cut tags, you should be safe from too much technical jargon.

I am officially out of the market for a job. My company offered me my dream job out of the blue. With a manager I really like and a chance to make life pleasant around here. There's still alot about the corporation as a whole I don't like. But having my dream job - software task manager - makes up for a lot.

Plus the fact that the job hunt had sucked so badly that I had given up for a while in the hopes of defending what scraps of ego still remained mine. But now I'm not "taking a hiatus" from the hunt, but really and truly giving up.

The job is being a software task manager, and this time I get to be REAL one - responsibility for schedule, purchasing, and sign off of people's time cards. The other times I've done this, I've done most of the work, but it hasn't been my butt on the line. The project is with a manager I worked for 2 years back, who liked me so much he requested me and got me off another high profile project. The feeling is mutual, so I'm excited to have a manager I like so much.

Yes, an actual Lakshmi performance. My body hasn't been completely consumed by the Babydolls (not that being devoured by Burlesque dancers is a bad thing, mind you).

OK, well actually the gig is Beth, the Indian dance student at Navarasa, not really Mistress Lakshmi 16th c. temple dancer. :) But the dance is similar to a form seen on temple walls in my empire. Boy am I a dork.

But I digress...

Here's the details:

Boston Arts Festival
Saturday, Sept. 8
Christopher Columbus Park - near the Acquarium on the Boston Waterfront
2:30-3:15 PM - we're "Dance Asia" on the website, but really we're Navarasa Dance Theater & Academy
Cost - free

Aparna, Pradeesh, Anil and the students of Navarasa are performing a selection of numbers from their recent show, which is a combination of folk dance, Bharata Natyam, Mohini Attam, Kalari Payattu and all sorts of other stuff. No aerial work - the stage is open air. I'll be performing at both the beginning and end of the show, doing a Kola Attam number - a stick dance done in South India.

So... I've had this post kicking about in my head this week, but as I had writing-with-a-goal in mind going on offline, I hadn't gotten around to spewing this randomness until now.

This Pennsic I had a really good time practicing every day - I did so from 9-10:30ish every day in little half hour blocks of stuff. All of it Indian, since doing Burlesque at Pennsic kinda breaks the Lakshmi Headspace for me. When I got home, I got to do two wonderful weekend days of dance the weekend after Pennsic. My teacher has scheduled us to take part in the Waterfront Festival on Sept. 8th, and so between the 4 regular hours of dance, plus the new Kola Attam number for the festival, plus Indian Serendipity where the 1 hour Kalari class becomes two hours, plus regular Babydolls rehearsal - I spent easily 10 hours of time in scheduled dance activities, probably 12 hours if you count practicing.

And I loved every minute even if I hurt a bit on Monday. And my practicing paid off to my instructors, and I felt better in class for having done the work.

I'm keeping the momentum going this week - practicing most mornings and most evenings, too in a nearby park, because my dance room isn't big enough to do the Kalari Mei Payattu - which is a long exercise regime to build stamina and correct form.

So.. here's what I've been thinking about...

How to get good at dance? )
bethlakshmi: (Default)
So... if you haven't read [livejournal.com profile] new_man's account of our Lamentable Journey Home go catch up. He gets it pretty much spot on. I would have you note that I was in a tightly packed Honda Accord for most of this, as I drive my car to Pennsic and was caravaning too and fro behind new_man and mermaidlady.

He's right that I did get more sleep than he did. Although I was vaguely aware of the two truck guy, I managed almost 2 hours of sleep in my car, and then more like 2.5 in the hotel. What [livejournal.com profile] new_man generously omits is that there was a bit of crying on my part. Once in Erie, when there was no vacancy to be had and I thought I would have to drive home with a really bad sunburn. New_man soothed me by magically producing cold packs which he had procured on one of his Homeless Man Walmart Runs. And then again in the hotel, when I just wanted to *be* home and I didn't know what was gonna happen next. New_man soothed me again by applying nice cold washclothes to my sore back. Best thing ever.

I should say, though, that I at least got a bit of a happy ending. After falling into bed midnight on Sunday, I awoke at 12:30 for long enough to unload my car. Then later in the day new_man momentarily woke me up when he installed plastic sheeting in my shower. Tuesday morning I celebrated my return to civilization after nearly 24 hours of sleep with my first shower in my new bathroom! It was SO AWESOME! I almost think I need to have a bathroom opening party so everyone can come and love the bathroom.

other pennsic memories )

To see someone even more crazy than you! Yep, I'm prepping for Pennsic, renovating my bathroom, letting three different Indian dance teachers kick my butt, and helping to prepare for two major Burlesque shows with the Babydolls. I'm gunning to have them put my picture in the dictionary next to the word Overcommitted. :)

But, the Burlesque show promises to be truly fantastic. We have gone above and beyond with our new numbers, and we're bringing back and embellishing quite a few of our favorites. I think the show will kick major ass.

Hi gang,

So some of you had noticed that my site was not online - I've moved now, and through the generosity of [livejournal.com profile] bhairavi, I'm now located with a significant portion of the rest of SCA India's brain trust:

http://generalism.net/lakshmi/

I've tested internal links, but haven't really gone through the external stuff.
bethlakshmi: (Default)
So last night I was feeling pretty down on myself. A combination of stuff that I don't really feel like whining about. But I'm pretty sure I'm just in the doldrums - both chemically and situationally just now.

After staring at my piles of fabric planning to sew something for my Babydoll commitments in July, I finally found that I couldn't get my relentless brain to settle on anything. I did, however, realize that I have a lot of some truly stunning purple fading to grey silk-like synthetic fabric that is too light to be anything with lots of seams... but too pretty to keep sitting in my stash. I'm thinking I want to make a basic Burlesque panel skirt out of it. And maybe a matching bra and hip belt out of the scraps.

And found a wonderful silvery grey satin that I could use to make a fan dance dress - which is a goal for July. This is (I hope) a good compromise for several points:
- Scratch said to be simple with the dress, so I'm doing just a well-cut sheath possibly with panels for the skirt. If it's gonna be simple, I think the fabric itself has to be striking.
- Satin is relatively nice to work in and flows prettily
- I wanted to be black and white with this outfit, the fans are black, and I want them to stand out against the dress and against the ubiquitous black backdrop found in at least half the theaters of the world.
- Scratch aptly pointed out that me & white & stains do not make for a good combination (you could say I'm a little accident prone)
- It is in my fabric stash already, so using it costs no additional $ and frees up space in my house

But I was unable to settle on a pattern... so the fabric is sitting there staring at me still.

Finally realizing that I was too weird in the head to do much of importance, I settled on a random project I've been wanting to do for several Pennsics now - garb for Horatio. Horatio Q. Pigg is my pink plushy traveling companion on my various adventures. He's been the comfort pig for work travel as well as all SCAdian camping trips. The pig dresses very well - sporting a slammin' leather jacket, jeans with a money clip and a red belt and a couple different snazzy T-shirts. He's very urban chic for a pig. It could be said that he has [livejournal.com profile] new_man's taste in fashion, but then since new_man has been the Pig Fashion Consultant and Occasional Shopper, that's not so surprising.

Like any good SCAdian - Horatio also has a persona. Did you really think he'd be hanging out with the likes of Yevsha, Morwenna and myself without one? In the SCA he is Hamzurnama Piguntalis, and that's how he's pre-regged for Pennsic.

Up until now, he's tended to dress in a sort of Chola style, since he's been being costumed by me, and I had neither the time nor the inclination to make garb not of my time period. But... he's been whining. He really wants to be Mughal. Partly cause Muslims don't eat pork. And partly cause the shapes of Mughal garments are much more flattering to one who is quite dense in the middle with very thin arms and legs. Horatio has demonstrated his disdain for Chola garments several times by unwrapping his dhoti spontaneously during the day, so that I return to the tent to find him frolicking about in just his choli.

So... I had some choli making left overs in some really sumptuous fabrics, and I've made my first crack at a Mughal jama. It still needs trim and the finishing tie wraps, but for a project of 2.5 hours, I'm fairly pleased with it. And the silk dupioni makes Hamzurnama extremely comfortable for snuggling, even if the jama does bulge out and make him look a little bit like a cake topping.

He'll need some pants to complete the set, and I'm going to have to figure out how to wrap a turban for him. I'm hoping his ears will help keep it on.

If you see him at Pennsic, don't ask if it's a dress. He's a little sensitive about this. Because he has very short legs, and no knees to speak of, the jama kinda looks like a dress on him, especially with no pants. He is definitely a boy pig and he does not want to be mistaken for a girl pig. So all references to dresses should be avoided.

I promise pictures when I'm more finished with this little endeavor.

Had an absolutely fabulous weekend. When a low point is getting to see a musical theater show for free, you know its good. Highlights - 5 hours of crazy Indian class goodness, a trip to a forge, a daytime date, tasty BBQ, Spiderman 3, and a Babydoll rehearsal. That's it in a nutshell. Now for my more long winded meanderings...about the fab weekend )
After a super cool weekend, the week is pretty lame.  I'm only working about 1/2 of each day, as they don't have more work for me to do.  The hunt has been slow going, although I stoked the fire some yesterday.  I'm feeling sort of lame and useless at my job.  I know that this is just circumstance, but between no work to do and no prospects, I'm a bit bummed.

To alleviate the feeling of uselessness, I'm cooking and cleaning at nights - I head home, cook a quick, low cal dinner and then appoint myself at LEAST one significant, measurable task.  Monday night was clean kitchen where "clean" - no dirty dishes, be able to wipe down all surfaces, put away all stuff that should live in another room.  Tuesday was the icky paperwork that takes real research to complete, the latest bills and more hunting.  Today's goal will be debated on the way home - it is either cleaning the living room or the bed room and possibly painting the banister some.  Coming home to a progressively nicer home is definitely a good pick me up.

Final thought - has anyone else tried "Synergy", a kombucha beverage?  I'm currently drinking the Trilogy flavor and have determined that it tastes like vinegar, and am trying to figure out if that's a good thing.

She's actually been back for a few months now, but now she's kicking into high gear with some great new dance workshops:

Kalari Payatu and Mohini Attam
Workshop
Saturday, May 19
10.30am to 11.30am (Mohini Attam)
11.45am to 1pm (Kalari Payatu)
$15 for one, $9 for two
Somerville, MA

http://www.navarasa.org/upcomingshows.htm

I won't belabor the already good descriptions on the site with what these workshops are. But I will comment that it's very cool, and I've not seen teachers for either of these types of movement in Boston before, and I doubt very much that the opportunity will occur again anytime soon.

If you are already an over committed dancer, Saturday is a great chance to get a drive by taste of these unique styles. Or if you are looking for a new dance form to commit yourself to, come and get in the loop as they start planning what the summer classes will be.

I've gotten to meet both the teachers and they are both expert dancers. I expect the classes to be beginner-friendly, but a mighty good workout.

I was really struck by the similarities and thought I'd blog quickly about it since I have a few minutes of slack time...

Lately I've been doing a whole bunch of training on how to write a proposal for a government contract (the US govt. that is). And when they described your target audience, I thought "my god... this is exactly what I feel like when I'm asked to judge an A&S competition!" So I thought it might be neat to scribble down both the similarities and a few strategies that are used by big, big companies (like mine) to win big, big award contracts. I figure if it's good enough for stuff that is big money, it's good enough for us in the SCA.

on writing an A&S entry like a proposal )

This may just be the first installment... I have a lot of ideas bubbling on this one... I got some really fabulous training on the fine art of proposal writing, and it really made me re-evaluate how I write documentation and how I suggest to others to write documentation.

My alter ego is up to her unusual standard mischief:

http://betty-blaize.livejournal.com/2567.html

At the last post, I didn't think I was performing, but now I am - and I'm really rather pleased with how the number came out on short notice. It's new material, and I'm happy enough with it to want to reuse it as regular repertoire. And it features (1) a garment I wore in high school (2) a type of garment that I have never made from scratch before (3) a garment I procured on some of my travel to unfun and non-exotic place. I'll let you figure out which is which. ;)

There's a possibility that we may not continue to do Paradise gigs. So... if you've always been meaning to come to the Paradise *sometime* - now would be that time. We have many other gigs lined up next month, but many of them are not as public, cheap or travel accessible as the Paradise.
