Dancy Friday
Dec. 23rd, 2005 09:38 amYay! So much dancing! Between dancing ladies Thursday, Aparna on Friday and a morning practice, I'm feeling quite dancy! :)
We are now getting Anne's treasure trove of information from her weekend of dance this fall. We postponed on that for a bit, as we were doing the Medicine Wheel, but now we get to dig in. We're doing debke & Arabic Cheese in a Can. :) A weird combo, but it works... no we are not layering one on top of the other!
Sadly, lots of debke has left my brain even in less than 24 hours... but it's neat stuff. It's a bit like Middle Eastern River Dance, as it's mostly about good posture and very presicisely timed, somewhat intricate foot work. Not suprisiningly, the foot work reminds me of Indian dance stuff, and maps well into the part of the brain I had already allocated to samamundi - the standing posture that allows for walking, stepping, stamping, hopping and such. It's kind of neat how it is so the same and yet so different.
The cheesy Arabic is accents and a few steps that are cuter than cute. Little "I'm shy but really I'm not" type moves that are adorable... my devious mind is trying to figure out how to fold these into the January Baby Dolls trio. Some may be a little TOO Arabic, as we are more I Dream of Jeanie, than anything a Middle Eastern person would recognize.
This morning had me practicing:
- Pushpanjali - head work, this time to music. And the last jar'adavu, which is really on 4X speed, not the 2X speed that the other jar'adavu step is... I was doing them all on the same tempo, and thus the last big lagged horribly.
- Javali - new assignment - do each move discretely. I wish I'd taken more time this week. I'd like to map out each word, to each move, to do them as staccato as possible. But it's starting to feel a little better... now we'll see if I'm hallucinating.
- Debke - I debke-ed around my little room, looking rather nutty, but that's what practice is for. Sadly, of the 6 or six sequences we learned, I solidy remember 3, and 2 are kind of fuzzy and I'm not even sure if there is a 6th...
- sword work - my sword and I are still not on good terms. We will continue to work on it.
Must remember to review the Istanbul group number, as I need to be solid enough to be a leader on this... and must have time somewhere in there to work out more choreography so feed to the dancers. And must work out another practice next week... Raven was gonna mail me her availability this week... but hasn't yet. So I think I'm gonna pick a time and just request her presence.
And must get going on Special Girlfriend.
