Lakshmi 3::Universe 2
Dec. 1st, 2005 09:38 amI think I've gotten 1 up on the universe today...
Baby Doll Prep:
Praticed the two new releases for December - "Let It Snow" and "Frosty". Let It Snow is a solo, and done as a reverse strip - a new first for me. I like that there are a lot of firsts out there in Burlesque for me... the bonus of being new to something. The plan is I wake up from a long winter's nap, and shiver, cause it's snowing! I, with a sheet on top of me, slip on underwear. I decided to abandon the sheet post bra and panties. Not only is it something the audience usually gets to see, but the blanket + dress was ungainly. I cap the whole set off with boots and gloves and head out at the end of the song.
This putting clothing *on* in a dancerly, sexy manner is definitely a new challenge. Especially hooks and buttons - which sometimes require a "thinking face" to do up properly... Will probably do with back to audience, so they can see the attaching, and to hide the thinky face.
I am reminded of
new_man telling me of a girlfriend he had that was very sexy when she was getting dressed. This posed a problem, as once she had gotten dressed, he just wanted to take all the clothing off again. :) I keep trying to think of how that sexy dressing process would look...
Crossing fingers that
new_man and
missminadances will like it on Sunday. Have Friday, too, to practice.
Frosty is Mina's first foray into group choreography. It's very cute. We played with the structure the last practice I attended, and she's definitely filled it out since. There's a few points I'm not getting from reading the choreography (I missed the last practice) but mostly it comes together. I'd be worried if I lost track of when I was supposed to be doing each part... but that's working fine. So now it's just clean, clean, clean. Luckily, Mina and I share an approach to writing up choreography, so her notes look alot like my notes.
Prepped for Medicine Wheel tonight. Have bunches of clothes, and some tribalesque jewelry. Want to review the veil work that happens once we have gotten into alignment. There's a few points that are slightly fuzzy, and I want to match the other ladies in cleanliness.
Didn't study. Bad me, still. Read a little at dinner, but not enough. By the time I was done with the dance stuff, I was mentally toasty, and opted for doing some paint by numbers to mellow out. I really should panic a bit more... I have less than two weeks until the final and final project is due. Thankfully - have two weekends at home. May have to keep it that way, forcibly, to make sure I get everything done.
This morning - 2 good suprises at work
This morning was the clincher - I won not one, but two good things. First, I had suspected a virus of being on my machine, when an executable with a suspicious name reported that it crashed with an annoying OK button. No, it isn't OK. Turns out that little mess was caused by some corporately deployed stuff, despite the suspicious name, so no fear of virus.
Better yet, I had a frustrating day yesterday that went like this:
- Tuesday, Boss A and I get together to plan responses to comments. Boss A says to check with Boss B about a certain technical posit made by the customer, that I don't agree with.
- Wednesday, I check in with Boss B about the posit. Posit is that Plan I and Plan II are equally bad, I believe that Plan I is better than Plan II and that we need SOMETHING to do the job, so let's go with the lesser of two evils.
- Boss B says that, indeed, Plan I is better than Plan II... but... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!! WHY ARE YOU DOING PLAN I? IT SUCKS, TOO. (long, long exposition on how very, very sucky Plan I is) BAD ENGINEER! NO COOKIE!! If you must have that functionality... do it as Plan III as it is better than Plan I and Plan II. (Honestly, Plan III didn't occur to me... especially as in the original circumstances, Plan III was not so feasible, but with the new info we have, Plan III is much more attractive.)
- Problem - Boss A is not in the office Wed. or Thurs. Shit. And Boss A is the one really in charge of this. Boss B is more of an advisor type person. But I really, really trust his opinions. My resolution - write Boss A, try to sell him on Boss B's thoughts, which I see the value of. And write up the rest of the comments to the customer.
Original thought - Boss A does not yeild technical points easily. I'd like to do the right thing, but it may be too late, or too much of an saving-face issue for us to do that right now.
Final outcome - Boss A agrees. He thinks that we can use the fact that the customer brought up the concern to say "OK, we'll do it your way" and amend the plans. We'll do something more like Plan III, eliminating the sucky Plan I.
Although this puts more work in my court - this is a change to the requirements, the use cases and the design... but it is a change that I believe adds value. As
jehan pointed out a few posts back - it's always better to make the change *now* than later... not matter how much *now* sucks, later-than-now will suck more. I should be glad, for example, that I haven't yet written a test plan.
Hoping that Bigger Boss C is around... this boss is good at the right way to the right thing, and can fill me in on how to perform the Ritual of Changing Technical Information while Appeasing the Process Gods. Oh yes, welcome to CMMI Level 3, in a company equipped for CMMI Level 5. If you don't know what CMMI is, it's a process standard like the ISO stuff. If you are still lost... feel lucky. Very lucky. Or... if you are a geek, go look it up on the Internet.
You may be wondering just how many bosses I have? 4 to be precise. And more strata of bossification above that...but they don't really affect my working life, so they don't count. Boss C loans me to Boss A. Boss B is just a repository of knowledge, but he's been my real boss before and may be again. Boss D, who isn't in this story, is higher than Bosses A, B, and C, and he handles business and contracts. Normally, I don't report to him, but he gets involved when things go to the bad place, and since I'm frequently in the throes of handling the technical side of the Bad Place, I often keep Boss D in the loop directly. Happily, this is not currently the Bad Place.
So... while I feel like I've taken a licking from the universe... I might just be climbing out from under the pile.
