Nice weekend
Apr. 18th, 2005 09:40 amGenerally a nice weekend. Too bad work is not looking so fun. :(
Let's see...
- scraped paint off banister - a saga I don't need to expound on
- did dinner with the tail end of Cooks Guild
- went to Buttery gaming night & played Settlers of Catan
NOTE to Self: Don't play 6 person Settlers games, you don't have the attention span for waiting through 5 other rounds before your turn happens.
- went to Greenwood Isle Picnic
A really lovely day. Apparently the witches of the Barony have gotten a handle on managing sunshine for our events - as Dreda and Lucien sent their fabulous Demo weather to Greenwood Isle, who improved upon it with a bit more heat.
They had a mini-court - Deirdre gave out awards to people who had helped their group, and then turned over control to her two new provosts (note to self, update website). She had gotten them both metal headbands with oak leaf garlands and a green stone. The look of surprise and happiness reminded me that it is not the status of the award that matters, what matters is realizing that the people that you like, like you, too, and took the time to show you in a public way. And our Baron gave Deirdre a letter of safe passage and a Crowned I (?Eye?) in token of his appreciation of all her hard work. That was another case of - it's not the officialness, or the nature of the reward that counts - it's seeing your hard work get recognized and an official 'thank you' said.
I'll sound goofy - but really everything was great. The food everyone brought was fabulous, and beyond copious. Had a great time playing games, and finally got to teach
jducouer the game of Ashtepada. Which means I also got to play it again. Must get more motivated in teaching it to SCA_Indians, as it saves one from trying to figure out how to be 'in persona' as your persona would play the game, as readily as you will.
It was over just before I pooped out. As we were packing up, I realized was a bit pink, and that getting out of the sun would be a Good Thing.
- went with
new_man and
mermaidlady to have dinner with new_man's mother. I'd forgotten how much I like Harvard Square.
- pre-mother-meeting we shopped at Pandemonium.
I'm currently trying to read the "what do you mean you haven't read that?" books. The books that made sci fi and fantasy what it is now. The books that all my literate friends seem to have read, but I haven't. So far it's been things like "Ender's Game", "Stranger in a Strange Land", Lord of the Rings (yes, I really hadn't read them), and many others. But, the trick is, I don't manage to remember which books those are when I'm in a bookstore. Luckily, I was shopping with some literate friends.
I asked
new_man to pick me out a book or two that fits in that category. He spent a good 10-15 minutes hunting with desperate intensity. We finally got two, but he had to run through 15 or 20 of his favorite books to find one. Now... I had just picked up H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds" without prompting, as it's on my "Victorian Sci-Fi" reading list for literary and LARPing purposes. But it was somewhat daunting that a specifically sci-fi, fantasy and gaming store does not have many of the old gems of literature, unless a movie was made about it recently. I feel somewhat vidicated - although I have a striking love of crappy, pappy books (Mercedes Lacky, and Laurell K. Hamilton come to mind - I love 'em, but they aren't great literature) - I do also like a good book that offers the reader some opportunity to do some thinking.
- new pirate ship expansion packs are out,
new_man and I each needed one.
mermaidlady politely rolled her eyes and put up with us talking like pirates for a few minutes.
- after dinner and ice cream, went home and played new Gloom game with
new_man, and we opened our ships. Gloom is pretty awesome... we have to suck more people in!
All in all a very fun weekend, if not necessarily perhaps as productive as it should have been. Have not paid bills or done the website work on my agenda. That will have to be tonight.
