Tuesday but Monday
Nov. 1st, 2005 11:52 amAh.. you can't avoid the Monday, even by starting work on Tuesday.
Yesterday with
new_man in Salem was lovely, although he was a pretty unhealthy gorilla. He has some sinus/head cold/allergy thing going on that is No Fun Whatsoever. But we meandered through the glorious day, seeing the Wax Museum and the Pirate Museum and getting some fair food that was no good for us whatsoever.
Unfortunately, Boston traffic saw fit to smack me hard for daring to have a little leisurely outing. Despite the fact that we left Salem at 3:30 - it took us TWO hours to get home, with jams on 95, 93, and then Morrisey Blvd. I had figured on 1 hour, with a little slack between 4:30 and 5:00. Then off to class (theoretically) at 5:00 giving a tight 1 hour to get from Mattapan to Westboro. Hah! Not only did I not get home until 5:30, but then I spend an hour and a half sitting on 93 and the Pike. So... all in all, it took a solid 4.5 hours to get from Salem to Mattapan to Westborough. For you non-Bostonians, that's a distance of 65 miles - 25 from Salem to Mattapan, 41 from Mattapan to Westborough. So... I managed an average rate of just under 15 miles per hour. Yep. I might have been able to bicycle there faster.
EDIT:
new_man accurately points out that from 3:30 to 7:00 is 3.5 hours, not 4.5. D'oh math major chick! So... that raises my travel rate to an astounding 18 mph. 90% of it on roads with speed limits of 55 or 65.
Getting in an hour late to class sucked, but I muddled through. Luckily, the midterm was delayed a few weeks ago, so I didn't miss a test, I only missed lecture time, and it seemed to be a pretty slow lecture. Everyone in class was rather droopy from projects. I, by comparison, was perky, filled with the adrenal rush of desire to get out of my car and beat other drivers to death with my bare hands. I was literally screaming "WHY ARE YOU ALL SO STUPID??" in my car by the end of hour 4 on Boston "expressways".
Today is a bright new day - we had a business meeting with our big executive guys. The future is apparently so bright we have to wear shades. Amazingly, having had 9 hours of sleep last night makes it much easier to be awake and attentive for these boring corporate things. Highlight - realizing that the high muckeymuck in charge of the companies we have just eaten recently looks kind of demonic when his picture is projected on a big screen. It may be the whiteness of his eyes, making it look like he had no pupils whatsoever. Note to self - avoid getting picture projected in slideshows.
Back to work to find out that one of my reviewers has interesting concerns to a major premise of my paper. I get to chase down my boss later and find out what the heck to do about it. Blech.
