My boss just called me in again with the "Inscrutable Voice" - it's a bland tone, so devoid of any emotion, that one fears the worse. Kind of the way hospital staff will ask you to come with them, so you can be in privacy when you shriek with grief at hearing the awful news. Really. It sounds THAT bad. Not angry... just... neutral.
If this were a sci fi movie, instead of my life, she would be a Vulcan, and this would be OK. Now that I accept that my boss it as least personality sharing with a Vulcan (sometimes she's actually funny and friendly... after a bit of getting to know her), I'm all good.
But it doesn't keep me from wringing my hands as I walk down the long 40 ft. walk to her office.
I go in... I say "hi" in what I hope is an upbeat way...
And I find out she's giving me a raise. Yes... this happens every year. She calls me in, I have a heartattack, she gives me a raise. I realize now that the new HR policies mean that for me raises actually come 2 months earlier - at the beginning of the quarter, not on the month - of joining the company. The raise is a polite one - not outstanding but not demeaning. About typical for what a conservative company like GD does for an employee who is a good worker, though who hasn't taken on such a responsibility leap as to have moved up to a new job title. That's about right.
As a yearly increase, it looks lovely on paper. As a biweekly salary, especially considering what Uncle Sam will do to it... well, I can't plan to retire sooner. ;P
I looked up my job code, out of curiosity. I am apparently the middle of the middle - I'm middle on the categories of salary ranges, and middle of my own salary range.
I'm generally pleased, but I'm beginning to realize that I don't want this money as much as I want to work less. Some of it is grad school, and maybe some of it is 30 looming at me in the coming May - but I realize I want more of my life to be under my control, not The Company's.
Ah well... time to start saving for either a super-early retirement, or more long leaves of absence for fun trips.
