Strip Recital
Feb. 12th, 2005 06:37 pmSo... after the snows cleared and we delayed the recital, it was somewhere mid-February before myself and a companion who shall remain nameless :), did our first Stripping Recital. We'd taken this 4 hour intensive, you see, and feeling ballsy we'd signed ourselves up to do the next recital. I think we rather floored our teacher, Wendy, from Gypsy Rose Dance Studio (www.gypsyrosedancing.com). The both of us have rather extensive dance training - particularly in the realm of Middle Eastern, which is so improvisational - but we've also studied a variety of other forms - focusing on either the highly physical or the highly sensual. So we already had alot of performance skills, this was just a new medium.
I did two songs - Electric Barberella by Duran Duran, and Be Still My Beating Heart by Sting. Two very different moods. And the class did I'm too Sexy for My... We added yet more technical expertise by working out a handout of the moves for the group choreography.
In the end, I found that while Wendy is a pretty good teacher, she's not much of a producer. As a teacher, I bet she's GREAT for ladies who are very scared, shy, self-conscious and afraid of their bodies. She's very enthusiastic, and truly a force of personality. She's not a bad explainer, and she really takes time to make sure that her students have the moves down.
As a producer... well... she should get someone else to produce. Understandably, production is not part of the stripper's repertoire, the way it is usually is for us low-budget, world dance types. Most of the ME and Indian dancers I know have had to do some level of production work - be it MCing, setting up the stage and the schedule, publicity and arranging the times, planning the cast and crew, etc, etc. But I don't want to delve into the bad stuff... it was a lot of fun to do this dance form... and I took a lot of good information away with me.
