Pensic Planning
Apr. 12th, 2005 07:04 pmWell... it's coming. Pensic's coming! Pensic's coming!
It's my inference that the nearness of Pensic is directly related to the amount of crap you need to bring to Pennsic. Those of us with fairly involved sets of supplies - like Yevsha, Morwenna and I, as well as many others - are starting to ramp up... After all only 3 months! Time to start that ambitious project.
My ambitious project this year is a class. I'm putting together a 5 day class for Indian dance. My dream is to teach folks more about nritta. Nritta is the pure dance part of Bharata Natyam that is alot of work, for a lot of beauty. There's no deep meaning - it's mostly about being pretty and technically accurate. There are some light "attititudes" to consider, but it's not all like the storytelling of abhinaya - the thing that the SCA has seen most of from me. Abhinaya (the art of expression) is easier for me to document, as both the verses and the movements are in historic treatises dating back to the SCA time periods. Nritta is definitely in existence by the 16th century, but it is unclear as to how much historic nritta matches modern Bharata Natyam nritta.
That's something I'll poke into in the coming months. That's Challenge #1.
But my main goal. The thing I REALLY want my students to walk away with is that the dance I do is not "super human" it is "alot of practice". It's my theory that those who come all 5 days will be able to do things that they never thought they'd be able to do.
But... that aside, with 5 days, it's GOT to be a walk-in class. Very few people have the attention span for all 5 days, and so I'm planning this so that new students can join in, while old students aren't bored. That's Challenge #2.
Challenge #3 is that I want to put together a really tight set of notes. That always helps me hash out every detail, and it gives students something really solid to take home. And it helps with doing the documentation of "is X move in a treatise?"
Well... I've begged Asim (the dance coordinator) for the slots I want.
Time to start planning.
