I also don't much get the pockets thing, but that's because I actually *like* carrying a bag. The book, two notebooks and 5 lipsticks that I routinely carry won't fit into any pockets I've ever encountered, except perhaps into those on a duster. And once you've got the bag, you can also add the Palm and keyboard, the pain-killer, the snack, the drink, the sunscreen and all those other necessities of life. (Which people who rely on pockets then ask you for.)

I carry a bag, and would be hard pressed to do without it. That said, the bag is great for things I might want at any number of stops during the day. Pockets are great for when I'm travelling between those stops. Part of it might be that I use a back-pack type bag, often, which is more comfortable with all the stuff I carry walking about the city, and using public transit. I like to keep a T token in pocket, along with the keys for my house, so I don't have to take off the pack and fish for them until I'm inside or past the turnstiles. That said, I wore a dress without pockets, yesterday, while doing errands and using trains and buses, and it wasn't all that traumatic.
