Glittery Business
Sep. 25th, 2006 10:20 amThe weekend was pretty busy. Had a lot of Out for Blood prep to do, and not really enough time to do it in. Got in a few non-OFB tasks, but mostly prepped for the show.
Stuff that was done:
- finished skirt for spider. But I don't like the red bows. They contrast too glaringly with the rose/scarlet top. May try to get black (or golden) satin ribbon next weekend.
- finished the spider gloves - they are very cool, but took a lot of time.
- got fake hair, heated curlers and a better big-curl curling iron
- got spirit gum and remover for better pastie application.
- started Egyptian pasties - they are now 3-D but need the handfinishing work
- finished my Egyptian bra - it went pleasantly fast, like a balance to those gloves.
- "finished" the Egyptian panels for the panties, only to find out that I sized them too small, so they are kinda dorky looking. Rotating the larger back to be the front, and making a new front will fix it. But ...grr... time is short.
To do:
- put Velcro on caftan for Mummy peice - 10 minutes
- fix head-feather for Sister Act- it needs to be wired onto barret, glue isn't working - 15 minutes
- Finish pasties for Mummy number - 1-2 hours
- Make other half of panties for Mummy number - 10 minutes
- Make skirt for Sister Act
- Fix corset cover for Sister Act (optional)
- rethread the spider skirt to black/gold ribbon - 20 minutes
That's all the really necessary stuff... OK and one thing that isn't necessary. It's the "if I can only do one optional thing..." thing. In part because I think it may really be necessary, as it's part of the outfit that needs the most construction work.
To get:
- thin, flexible wire for head feather
- satin ribbon (will have to wait for next weekend)
Looking at the time estimates, I theorize 2-3 nights of work. Which isn't too bad the week before dress rehearsal. Except that I also have:
- nothing tonight (yay!)
- Rehearsal Tuesday
- interview in *Tewksbury* Wednesday at 7:00
- ?rehearsal Thursday? - shit! forgot to ask Honey about it! Time to write email.... email sent...
- Friday - Goose with Moomba at Aislish's
- Saturday - ?Coronation?
- Sunday - load in for the show... prepare to have no free time until show opens on Tuesday.
I would like to go to Coronation. Partly cause I like the SCA. But more so because I'd like to see Moomba (my camp), and I'd like to spend non-Babydolls time with
new_man and
mermaidlady, even if they will also be busy attending to their Majesties.
But... I'm not sure I'm gonna manage it. I also know that Sunday is load-in, and I will be physically and mentally busy (read as ... frantic), and around people all day. So maybe a Saturday spent sewing, hiding from people and possibly getting a little down time is not such a bad thing.
I feel particularly sad that I snapped at
new_man this weekend. We had a horrible trip through Boston that noon-afternoon - due to an accident in the Big Dig Tunnels (between two cars - not cars vs. tunnels). And with not getting what I wanted to do done Friday night, I was utterly stressed out.
We also did a show at the Lizard Lounge that was a mixed bag. Not bad but not great. The good news is - Ziaf the band that hired us, loved us. The audience, however, was confused by us. The first set met with mild approval. The second set was performed to droves of people herding out the door and audience that seemed to prefer to talk amongst themselves.
The band was really neat. They perform Edith Piaf songs, and have this fabulous throaty French vocalist. Edith Piaf has apparently sung every French torch song I've ever heard of. It's the quinessential French heartache music. Nice stuff to have Burlesque dancers with - even if the crowd didn't get it.
The venue is also non-optimal for dancers - it's mostly standing room and very squished. We don't have much room to even take off clothes and not step on them. And with the band setup, you don't want to toss clothes very far, or they may get lost in the cabling and instruments. And the crowd can't see much, particularly if you wanted to do floor stuff. Nothing was lost or broken, but it left me feeling that I was not as polished as I could have been.
Drowned sorrows in glass of wine and snacky food at
lindau_nemesis and
mesatchornug, where they willingly listened to our woes and sympathized - being other members of the Babydolls who know this kind of suckiness.
The silver lining - at least Ziaf was very positive about us. And they may want us for other shows. If we become a standard feature, the audience may sweeten towards us. We were a weird surprise I think.
On the good stuff side, the show has possibilities. I like what Scratch said - "All the acts have the potential to be great". I'm not sure that any of them are there *yet* - but they are in varying levels of goodness. We just have to get them to GREATNESS!! That's what I want to do - be great. I'm heartened that Scratch said "it's good" to the spider number - and he was seeing our very first time with our real stage setup. We are highly affected by our scenery, so this was a real coup.
Also -
lindau_nemesis and
mesatchornug snickered away for Sister Act, and Scratch looked mildly pleased.
Wish we had time to show him the Mummy number, but we took the time instead to do some really necessary setup for the spider, and then we stayed late practicing it.
I totally loved
lindau_nemesis and
mesatchornug in their vampire number. It's terribly cute. I like all the numbers, but I'm terribly smitten by that one. Perhaps because it's not what I expected out of "a vampire duet number". I don't want to give it away - you'll just have to come see the show.

Date: 2006-09-25 03:21 pm (UTC)Lizard Lounge was fairly ick for me too. Imagine doing poi in there. I also lost my silver cigarette holder to the shiny silver confusingness of the band set up. : (
At least it was only $2.

Date: 2006-09-25 03:46 pm (UTC)We got it. Even with the roughness of "this isn't really our set" and "we've never done this in front of people before" and "Ohmigod I can't stop giggling" and "Why doesn't this CD player get any louder", it was good -- and pretty clear what the story was.
I'm pretty burnt down to the bone, J. If I didn't say it was good, I'm sorry.
