So... I have a confession. A secret I've been keeping about 15 years...
I have a secret passion for hip hop, and what has now become crunk.
Yes, I'm a big white chick, and a new age yuppie to boot. But I really love about 75% of the music on 94.5 in Boston, even though I like the metail of 107.3, the retro of 98.5 and the alternative on 101.7.
Last night I indulged my secret desires. I had finished a late dinner at Center St. Cafe (with freey yummy angel food cake for dessert!!), and was feeling itchy. I had not managed to make it to ManRay last night, and I hadn't been to another club in Boston in well over 5 years. But, I decided it would be good to branch out. I figured I'd find a lesbian dance night, and see if I could find one with hip hop mixed with 80's... And, lo and behold - Axis was hosting just such a night.
Except, well, I got in the wrong line. Apparently Avalon/Axis are a little rat's nest of dance floors. The one I got in was hip hop/crunk, not dyke night. The music sounded good (note confession above), but when I got in there were a few too many men for a ladies' night.
Well... this is were being bi- and mostly wanting to dance came to good ends. I don't really care who else is on the floor, as long as the music is good, and the music was pretty good. But - I got real tired, real fast, of aggressive guys. Now... they were all about half a head or less shorter than me. And I get that the music is really sexual. But... eesh. Didn't anyone tell them that frontal approach is polite. I found one guy humping my back!
In one song I had to say no to three guys. Now... I have been told I'm sexy, but I don't usually believe it. But it was pretty easy to feel sexy when guys are coming out of nowhere like dive bombers. I'm still not sure about the horny-ape factor, though. Some of these guys seemed like they'd gladly boink anything. Being "anything" isn't so flattering.
But... well... I like dancing. I didn't plan to bump and grind. I didn't want to give an impression of availability that I had no desire to fulfill. I found myself on the edges of the floor, watching the block dancers with envy. They get spiffy security guards stationed around them, and a whole 2 square feet and a pole (which neither used well) to themselves. Sigh... I'd love that!
Was about to go home, took one more walk around the floor, and noticed there was a raised platform, with nice chairs, and lots of space. Quite a few couples and girls were up there. I figured, what the heck, I'll see if I can be there, too. If nothing else, maybe the horny guys won't want the public rejection of me turning them down in eyesight of the rest of the floor. Lo and behold, the security guard manning the entrance looks me up and down and lets me in. Not sure if there was a "nice looking" requirement, or if he was providing the flattering eyeball gratuitiously.
HEAVEN! I now have both space, and no guys. I have the opportunity to lift my legs more than 1 foot off the floor and wave my arms (within reason) without hitting someone. YAY!! I find that the girls up there are pretty good dancers, and they welcome me. I even get in a showing off floorwork competition with one (I think she won, but I'm not sure). Found a nice, audience facing space, and let the dance out. Weee! Scrutinizing the better of the two go-go dancers, I worked on a new style, blended with very trampy Middle Eastern stuff. Even ended up rescuing a girl who was bumping and grinding with a guy she didn't want to be with. Not sure why she didn't just say "no"... girls are wierd. But got good club karma points.
Highlight of the night - one of the "command presence" security guards says "What's your name?" (I say, he repeats) "Your moves are *on point*, looking good". I said thanks and that it meant a lot (coming from him). It was, in many ways, a much better compliment and having guys come over to hump my leg. Not only was it less icky, but a security guard has to look at all the dancers, every night, night after night. To have one take the effort to take a moment to compliment me, when he clearly has work to be doing, was really cool.
Left at 1:30... both tired, and decided I didn't want a part of the end of night feeding frenzy where lonely guys try to pick up drunk chicks. Being neither lonely nor drunk, not my scene.
So... why the ramble. Mostly to remember this stuff if I ever go again.
And... if you read all this and also have a secret love of hip hop/crunk, and think you'd like to go - I'll go with you. Would be nice to know someone.
