Quintavian Hafla

bethlakshmiTrue to my word... I'm really trying to keep an archive of the dancerly things I do! So... backdating to the Quintavian Hafla, I'm just jotting down some notes on what I remember.
Mostly I remember enjoying it. Quintavia is a friendly gang of folks, who always make me feel welcome. They draw enough dancers, drummers and musicians to make for a really companionable day full of good classes, and good performances.
What I did:
- taught a class on Intro to Indian Classical Dance - had a nice, enthusiastic crowd, who happily joined in and learned a few tidbits.
- taught a class on Indian costuming - the first in a long time. Realized that what I need to do is teach a my specific era. There's just too much to wrap one's arms about, otherwise.
- did 3 dance performances:
- our Road Show kicked things off, and was well recieved
- did Ghawazii
- did the Mohini Slokum where I sang and danced simultaneously. I think time spent with the Storyteller's really paid off, as my preface of "what is the dance about" took the form of a real story, and not just a lecture. Thanks to Yevsha for his post-story critique at the last meeting. Slimming down the story to a clear happy ending really helped make it good.
Other stuff I really liked:
- I was really impressed by Rosa's Middle Eastern music class. It was a really good combo of a little theory, some rules to play by and then plenty of hands-on with breaks for more notes and more education. The only thing I'd say to add would be to have handouts of melodies. Knowing that Rosa is a professional music teacher, real world, I shouldn't be surprised. But it is so rare to see a class that is so very solidly organized with such a nice flow, that it really stuck with me.
Hopefully they will have another next year!
