Apple just rocked my world.
Sep. 30th, 2006 04:57 pmYeah, when he reads this
new_man will be crossing his arms over his chest with that superior-looking expression, saying to me (psychically) "Well, duh, Lakshmi.. they're *Apple*. They just rock."
When iPods came out I thought they were cool, but probably a trend that would get eclipsed by something else.
Then I thought they were probably great for people who do a lot of not-in-car commuting around - lots of my friends use the MBTA as their primary means of transit, and thus don't have access to perfectly good CD players.
Then I just thought they were a little too expensive to justify to myself.
But... after flying hither and yon, carrying a megaton of CDs and DVDs and tapes around with me, I thought - "there's got to be a better way". I have seen the light. I am a convert.
Having had a No Good, Pretty Bad week of stress and frustration, marked by a few key high points, I decided it was time to upgrade my techology level and get me an iPod. Despite the fact that I am a big, big geek when it comes to my field, when it comes to the world of home media, I'm a complete novice. It's a little wierd that I can decode network transmission algorithms by hand, but that I can't seem to figure out which iPod to buy. Fortunately, the folks at Tweeter are used to complete idiots, and were very good at explaining stuff. And I got to be a customer for once, saying dumb things like "Look... I want to use it to do X, Y and Z, and I currently own and do not want to upgrade thingy 1, 2 and 3 - so what do I need?" I left $300 poorer, but with an order in for an iPod Nano (27GB, black), a iPod to audio line-in for my stereo and a whole bunch of free iPod thingies.
I still didn't have iTunes set up on my slow computer last night, but I got it configured and started uploading in and around dance practice today - one of the first things to upload being the OFB II soundtrack. Now I only have about 6 or so CDs uploaded, but I can take my little iPod around with me, and I even bought about $8 worth of music - the radio play songs that make me bounce with glee this month. And a free Podcast by a white guy living in Japan - ooOOoooOooo... Japanese...
Took it out with me for brunch and errands. It is the Coolest Thing Ever, that I can hop in and out of my car and around stores and be followed by my favorite music. It makes waiting in dull lines a whole lot better. And now I can't easily loose track of Babydoll music that Scratch burns for me... I will upload it to the iPod and can hook the iPod to pretty much anything.
Yeah, I know, all you cool people on my friends lists already have iPods, and are like "duh, Lakshmi, these are the basic features, ho hum..." But, well, they are new to me. :P

Last night was a simply fabulous night. Good food - man oh man! Probably the best food I've had in the last 3 months or so. Ate way too much, but wow! When food like that comes along you just gotta eat. :)
Enjoyed the companionship even more. The gang was folks I camp with at Pennsic and close friends thereof. A really lovely crowd to spend a Friday with. Honestly, it was probably the best part of the entire week. I hadn't realized how long it's been since I just hung out, I've been flying around way too much. It was just perfect.
In a way, I'm bummed I'm not at Coronation with
mermaidlady,
new_man and
rufinia and Paedric (who I don't think has a LJ), and a whole host of other Easterners I like. But I had to have a Sanity Day before Out for Blood starts. OTOH - I don't think that Coronation could top last night, and that's the sort of energy I'm really Jonesing for - good friends, good food, lots of stories...
Many huge thanks to
oakleaf_mirror for making such a lovely evening happen.
